GCSE Fine Art

Course Overview

Year 9 is a broad introductory course which improves your practical skills in many different areas. The emphasis is upon building your confidence when using a wide range of media. You will enjoy workshops with professional artists, exhibit your work at the College and go on a field trip to an exhibition in Singapore. By the end of the year, you will have built up a portfolio of visual work containing drawings, paintings, photography, prints, sculptures and individual research.

Year 10 builds upon Year 9, but the emphasis is much more upon developing personal choice, creative thinking and independence. With your teacher’s help and advice, you will focus on three major coursework projects which are based around natural forms, architecture and the human figure. You will develop preparatory work for each project which shows how you have researched, experimented with and developed your ideas; you will also produce finished pieces which demonstrate your talents. You will again take part in workshops with visiting artists and will visit an art exhibition in Singapore.

In Year 11, the focus in Term 1 is upon extending, refining and completing your coursework units to present the best of your work and ideas. Coursework is worth 60% of the total GCSE grade and the final examination is worth 40%. You will be given 10 weeks to develop ideas and planning for the exam and during the exam itself, you have 10 hours to complete a major piece of finished work over two days in school.
