FAQ

Q: I am currently studying Mandarin as a Second Language course in Year 8 and I would love to continue with Chinese but I am really struggling with this. Can I opt for Mandarin as a Foreign Language in Year 9, that is, changing my Mandarin pathway in Year 9?

A: If you are on the Second Language pathway since Year 7, you will normally continue with this in Year 9. However, your teacher will use their professional judgement to recommend a suitable course for appropriate challenge. It may be that you have really done your best for the past few years in the Second Language pathway but the course is not deemed appropriate challenge for you anymore (gathering all evidence from classwork, homework, checkpoint tasks, end of year assessments, student voice, parent voice etc). If this is the case, we will consider carefully your request. It is case by case, students' well-being and appropriate challenge come first.

Q: Do I have to do IGCSE Chinese?

A: The short answer is 'no'. However, the majority of our students choose to continue with their Mandarin pathway.

If you feel that you're struggling with Chinese First/Second language, you do NOT have to continue with this in Year 9. We recommend that you choose another language, e.g. French/German/Spanish to keep you options open for IB.
