Additional Mathematics

Free-Standing Mathematics Qualification (OCR Examination Board - Additional Maths) (Course Code 6693)

The FSMQ Additional Mathematics is an extra qualification holding the same number of UCAS points, or University tariff points, as an AS-Level. It is not a GCSE qualification but goes above the content of other GCSE qualifications.

Content is taught to students who are in Band 1.

Throughout Year 9, flexible and visible pathways afford pupils the opportunity to work up to Band 1, providing equal access to all.

As the course moves into Year 10, students in Band 1 begin to study the FSMQ Additional Mathematics course. By Year 11, almost all of the content is FSMQ Additional Mathematics. We structure the course this way as the content progresses in difficulty.

This accelerated pace is suitable for our most capable mathematicians but is not appropriate for all; the syllabus is intended for high ability students for whom the Extended course would not present a significant challenge. Nonetheless, some high ability students prefer not to take this option, for the challenges it presents regarding extra workload (in taking one further set of examinations, alongside all existing GCSEs).

The FSMQ is not offered as an 'option', as it is not appropriate for all. As our objective is to ensure that students are in a band that supports them appropriately, we do not accommodate requests for students to be placed in Band 1. However, it is possible for students to move between bands. This will be a data based decision combined with teacher judgement and input from students and parents.

Most importantly, sitting the FSMQ Additional Mathematics examination is not a pre-requisite for studying Higher Level Maths at IB. For students in Year 11 who are in Band 2 and motivated and capable of studying HL Maths, we offer a 'Head Start to IB' CCA. These pupils sit the Extended 0607 course without taking on the burden and additional workload of the FSMQ. This option often works best for many pupils, assisting them in maximising their GCSE potential across all subjects.
