Senior School Book Week 2023

Monday 27 February to Friday 3 March 2023

See the above article in the context of the Term 2 Dulwich Diaries magazine:

“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers.” – Charles W. Eliot”

The wet weather this week did not dampen our enthusiasm for what was a truly wonderful Book Week as we have reconnected, rediscovered and reignited our passion for the written word. There have been a plethora of activities and opportunities for our children to enjoy.

Not least of these fun activities was our book character dress up day today, which was enjoyed by young and old across the College. It reminded me of the wonderful quote by George Bernard Shaw when he said that, “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”

Book Week is always a highlight in the College calendar. It was an inspiration to see students across the College engage wholeheartedly with books and storytelling in all its forms.

This year students had the opportunity to reconnect with classes across the schools for a whole College Buddy Reading initiative. This experience was especially nostalgic for those students who had graduated from DUCKS and were returning to former classrooms for the first time. Buddy Reading enabled students and staff across the college to establish connections through shared reading, strengthening the bonds among our community of readers.

All students experienced the fabulous performance storytelling techniques of our storyteller in residence, Mara Menzies, as she regaled them with age-appropriate stories. Our DUCKS students enjoyed many a read-aloud from guest storytellers visiting the Once Upon a Story Chair, whilst Junior School students were busy guessing teachers' favourite childhood books and solving mystery reads and book-themed puzzles to earn house points. And, of course, it culminated today in our highly anticipated Book Character Dress Up Day, which is always a delight to see, especially how it raises funds for our local literacy charity, ReadAble. By celebrating Book Week, we hope to raise awareness of how reading books can make a difference in children's lives, encouraging them to read for pleasure. It was a fabulous week. We feel very fortunate that we are given so much time and enjoy so much buy in by the whole college community in order to continue to nurture this essential aspect of the culture here at DCSG.

Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income.

Besides covering excursion costs, we can use the funds to pay for volunteer trainings as well as workshops for parents, with a focus on digital safety and literacy. The volunteer trainings were mainly paused during the pandemic, and the parent workshops are a new idea we are developing.

We are excited to announce that an in-person Book Fair is returning to Dulwich this year. The Closetful of Books will be housed in the-DUCKS Library on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 February. It will then be located in the PAC foyer from Wednesday 1 to Friday 3 March.

We will have between 600 to 800 titles at the book fair. There will be picture books from all over the world, early readers, junior fiction and beautiful middle grade and young adult novels. There will also be a range of activity and non-fiction books as well as graphic novels. If space allows, we will have a nice selection for the grown-ups too.

The books will range between $15 to $50 (coffee table books, some non-fiction).

A comfortable budget for parents to send with their children is $20 (the child will be able to purchase one book guaranteed). If you would like your child to purchase more than one book, please have an adult visit the book fair with your child, or use the reserve and collect option.

Payment can be made using cash or cheque (children) or credit cards and PayNow (adults).

Students are encouraged to bring their own shopping bags as we won't have plastic bags. We will have an assortment of donated/recycled paper bags on standby though.

For families who are not able to visit the book fair, they are very much invited to shop on our webstore (https://closetfulofbooks.com). Please use the discount code DCSGBOOKWEEK2023 to receive 10% off your order. The code is valid from 1 Feb to 12 Mar 2023. Local shipping is free on all orders above SGD25
