Extended Essay
The Extended Essay (EE) is one of the core requirements of the IB Diploma. A 4,000-word research project, the Extended Essay provides students with an opportunity to enquire deeply into a topic of academic interest. It builds the independent research and analytical writing skills students will be expected to use at university, while placing an emphasis on the importance of self-reflection, engagement and intellectual growth.
KEY FEATURES:
- The EE process helps prepare students for success at university and in other pathways beyond the Diploma Programme.
- It is a piece of independent research on a topic, chosen in consultation with a supervisor (a teacher at the College).
- Up to 4000 words in length, it is accompanied by a reflection form (RPPF) of 500 words.
- It is the result of approximately 40 hours of work on the part of the student.
- Students are supported by a supervision process of around 3–5 hours, which includes three mandatory Reflection Sessions.
- The EE is compulsory and students must achieve at least a D grade if they are to be awarded the Diploma.
- It is externally assessed and, in combination with the grade for Theory of Knowledge, the EE contributes up to three points to the student’s total IB Diploma score.
