Group 6 - Arts and Electives
At DCSG we firmly offer three Arts courses - Visual Arts, Theatre or Music. We are also looking, dependant on student interest, to run two other Arts courses - Film Studies and Dance. Please see option choice support as DCSG is also looking to offer students the ability to take two Arts options Theatre and one other (please see options choice pathway), if according to the IB organisation rules they choose to take the Interdisciplinary subject of Environmental Systems and Societies.
At DCSG we encourage and believe that where possible students should choose an Arts course. We believe that students should take a broad and balanced programme by selecting one subject from each group.
We actively encourage students to ensure that the subjects they select are appropriate for university entrance, will maximise their potential and provide satisfaction and enjoyment. Students who are selecting a second Science or Humanities course as an Elective in Group 6, must provide reasons for selecting the course, for example, “I plan to take Engineering at Imperial University and to apply I must study Mathematics HL, Physics HL and Chemistry HL."
Guidance regarding choice of level
- Students are required to receive an A or A* in their (I)GCSE or equivalent studies to do the Higher Level. If students have not taken the course previously or at (I)GCSE level, the Standard Level courses are designed for those that have not studied that subject before. It must be noted that these are skills based courses, so students who choose this route must along with the teachers have confidence in a base level for these skills.
- Students looking to study a creative arts based course, these courses will often help the support of a portfolio of work alongside a skills set to be a strong candidate for -
- Foundation Arts
- Music
- Theatre / Drama / Dance
- English Major
- However note that an Arts course can show a very different level of skills to other courses in the IB Diploma and will show Universities your breadth of ability (US Colleges in particular enjoy this breadth)
