Group 4 - Sciences

At DCSG we offer seven Science courses -

  • Three are traditional laboratory based sciences - Biology, Physics and Chemistry
  • Three are creative applied sciences - Design Technology, Sports Exercise and Health Science and Computer Science
  • One interdisciplinary science / individuals and societies subject - Environmental Science and Societies

All students must take one Science course and have the opportunity to take a second in the Electives block.

Guidance regarding choice of level

  • Students are required to receive an A or A* in their (I)GCSE or equivalent studies to do the Higher Level.
    • Double Higher Level science is very tough, so students should choose this option with care.
    • Physics Higher Level should be combined with Maths Analysis SL or HL or Math Applications HL to support the level of Mathematics in the course.
    • Biology has a very high level of content - so be aware of your learning style and skill set.
    • Chemistry, like all sciences, has a level of challenge to it but because of this it is looked on very favourably by Universities the world over for entry into courses such as Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacology and Engineering.
    • Environmental Systems and Societies is a course that fully deals with real life situations and issues pertaining to the world today. It is as such a cross between a Geography subject and a Biology subject. It is a softer science for students that will not pursue a lab based science career pathway. Note it is only offered at SL. It is not necessarily recommended that this is chosen alongside Biology or Geography, but in certain circumstances it could be possible.
    • More traditional Universities often value laboratory sciences over applied creative sciences, so it is important to research what is needed for the courses you are looking to undertake.
  • Students looking to study different sciences with the knowledge it can lead to a wide variety of courses and careers -
    • Double science is most often studied if you are to follow a University course in Medicine, Engineering or a Pure Science.
    • Design Technology is suitable alongside Visual Arts for students wishing to study Architecture, although some more scientific course may prefer Physics and one of Arts or Design Technology.
    • Computer Science is not a necessity for studying this course at University, most often the level of Mathematics (often at HL) is more important.
    • Students wishing to go into Sports Science, most often will look at a combination of Biology and Sports Exercise and Health Science.
