Group 3 - Individuals and Societies

At DCSG we offer six Individual and Societies (Humanities) courses - Economics, Business Management, History, Information Technology in a Global Society, Geography and Psychology. We also offer one interdisciplinary subject Environmental Systems and Societies which is also considered a Science subject and so can be taken in either area. All students must take one Individuals and Societies course and have the opportunity to take a second in the Electives block.

Guidance regarding choice of level

  • Students are required to receive an A or A* in their (I)GCSE or equivalent studies to do the Higher Level. If students have not taken the course previously or at (I)GCSE level, the Standard Level courses are designed for those that have not studied that subject before. The Higher Level can be more difficult and will depend on a students attitude, and academic ability shown in other similar subject areas.
    • Psychology, Business Management and Information Technology in a Global Society - no students will have studied before, we will be looking for ability and performance in another humanities subject.
    • It is not recommended that students study both Business and Economics, as this reduces the breadth of their courses and is not always considered well by Universities. For Business and Economics they are often more accessible for those that have not studied them before, and so taking either SL or HL if you have not taken an IGCSE before is perfectly fine.
    • Information Technology in a Global Society - is the study of technology from a Humanities perspective looking at how technologies work but also their impact on society in areas such as politics, entertainment and education. If you are interested for example on how surveillance technologies and facial recognition, or social media and fake news works and how it is impacting us - this is the course is definitely for you! Note this course offers a different route to those that do not want to code as with Computer Science but still have an interest in technology and IT.
  • Students looking to study a social science or business based course -
    • Law ( Subject chosen should be History if possible)
    • Business / Marketing (Economics is supportive although not a necessity)
    • History
    • Psychology
    • Politics Philosophy and Economics
