Whenever it is possible it is a good idea to use your own pictures in your slideshows, videos, and other multimedia projects. By doing that you know that you haven't accidentally infringed on anyone's copyright. We know it's not always possible to use your own pictures. That's when we'll turn to the Internet to find a picture that is in the public domain or has a Creative Commons license.

If you need to illustrate a poster or presentation and you need a photo or clip art and you can't use own, below is a list of free sources. This means that they are not copyrighted and you do not have to give credit. If they lead you to items that require "royalty" fees, you have been taken to the "pay to play" section.

When looking for public domain and Creative Commons images to use in multimedia projects it's best to go to sites like Unsplash, Pixabay, and Photos for Class instead of Google Images The reason for that recommendation is that in the past Google Images hasn't been terribly clear about image licensing even when the " for re-use" filter has been applied to image search results. Fortunately, Google is taking some steps to change that.

Creative Commons - is a nonprofit organization that enables the sharing and use of creativity and knowledge through free legal tools.

Britannica ImageQuest is one of DCSG Libraries' many online subscriptions which offers over 3 million rights-cleared images - an extensive and broad range of offering of curriculum-relevant imagery and clip art materials (infographics, signs and symbols, graphic concepts and cool vector illustrations), all rights-cleared for educational, non-commercial use. Also available in Arabic, French, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish and Welsh!
