Kathryn Hemming - Raising a Reader - Coffee & Converstaion

Kathryn has always been a passionate reader and, inspired by Miss Honey in Matilda and Miss Stacey in Anne of Green Gables, started her teaching career in 1996. Over t25 years, she taught in schools in the UK and Australia and became a Headteacher in London in 2013. In 2019 Kathryn moved to Singapore to be the founding Vice Principal, Head of Junior School at NLCS (Singapore). In every school Kathryn has both taught English and led successful book groups, including those focussing on reluctant readers and advanced-level reading.
> Kathryn is now working as an Educational Leadership Consultant and Coach, supporting fellow practitioners in stepping up into leadership roles and empowering new school leaders to be positive and effective from the outset. She continues to read voraciously and publishes fortnightly book reviews of leadership books on her website. Kathryn also volunteers for Room to Read, a charity whose purpose and values align closely with her own.

In her presentation she focused on:

  • The difference between being able to read and being a reader
  • The benefits of being a reader
  • Tried and tested methods for encouraging your child to read
  • What to avoid when encouraging your child to read

Gerry Savage from Room To Read also spoke at the session and left us with this valuable message:

It was lovely to see you all today, thanks for taking the time to hear more about Room to Read and to hear from our fabulous volunteer, Kathryn! If you’d like to find out more about our work, you can visit our website. We have some really exciting initiatives and events coming up this year, so please keep an eye out and email singapore@roomtoread.org if you’d like to find out more or see how you can get involved.

Do check out our free to download mini-book She Creates Change telling the stories of students from our Girls’ Education Program, from our partnership with Rebel Girls. The stories and illustrations are beautiful and perfect to read with girls and boys alike. Stay tuned for a film being released later this year and get in touch if you’d like to find out how you could be part of this!
