International Literacy Day
On Thursday, 8th September the College will celebrate UNESCO International Literacy Day - a day to celebrate education equality, diverse authors, excellent children's literature and reading and writing in different languages. It is also a day to focus on world literacy rates and reflect on the world’s remaining literacy challenges. The issue of literacy is a key component of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
What is happening?
- The three schools across the whole DCSG will participate in two 15-minute DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) sessions to mark the day
- Students are encouraged to dress up in symbolic colours and bring in an optional donation of $2 to support the ReadAble charity, Singapore.
A very tidy sum donated to ReadAble charity, Singapore. Well done Dulwich students!
A short library postscript to International Literacy Day in September when we celebrated the importance of literacy in our lives and reignited an appreciation of reading. Our students dressed up in many different colours and raised a total of $3,445.25. As it was also a day to consider global and local inequalities, the money was donated to the Singapore based charity ReadAble who support literacy programmes for children in need.
Fiona Shea, the DUCKS librarian met with Bernice Lee, the Executive Director of ReadAble in the Chin Swee area where the volunteers work. The charity was started in 2014 and now has 100 volunteers teaching 1-1 classes in literacy and numeracy to children on the estate. They use Catch+, another local charity’s premises for the classes which also houses a library of donated books. They also take the children on educational visits to the museum and theatre and our donation will help pay towards these trips.
